PublicationsDoug and Cindi Bower - my favorite Guantojuato travel writers, Doug and Cindi Bower, have written three books and dozens of articles on visiting and living in Guanajuato. Although they paint a largely negative picture of the behavior of "ugly Americans" in Mexico, I like them because they get me thinking about my own attitudes and behavior as a resident of GTO. I disagree with most of their comments about American behavior, having never observed the ugly behavior they report in my many years of living here. Still, their books are worth reading for their insights on the differences between our cultures and the practicalities of living here. Visit their website at http://www.mexican-living-guanajuato.com; read the articles, buy the books! Dirección Municipal de Cultura (Spanish only) - the city of Guanajuato sponsors a multitude of events and publications each month; many of the publications have a very small distribution and then disappear. The Dirección Municipal de Cultura publishes a series in Spanish which I have scanned for display here, until the day that the city decides to publish them on the Internet. These publications are low-resolution printing on newsprint paper so the scan quality is poor; however, the alternative of losing these publications entirely is even less attractive. Here are the publications. RestaurantsLa Gallina Aristotélica - In La Plaza de San Fernando, Juan and Erica provide good, authentic Mexican dishes with the nicest service, and reasonable prices. Juan speaks excellent English, having spent time as a student in the USA. The food preparation is super-clean - these youngsters understand the meaning of hygiene, and I've never heard a complaint from their customers. This is where we eat out most often, and they deserve your business too! Bars and clubsLa Dama de Las Camelias - With a large student population and a steady stream of young backpackers, most of Guanajuato's bars cater to the younger crowd. If you can stand the thump, thump, thump of techno-rock and hip hop, there are several bars and clubs to try-out, none worth mentioning here. For the mature crowd, La Dama (on Sopeña, in front of the Quijote Museum) is the place to hear decent Latin music and dance a few hours. The music is primarily salsa, with an occasional merengue, bolero, cha cha, and cumbia thrown-in. The decoration in this club is very unusual, too eccentric to describe - go see for yourself. We usually arrive around 10:00 PM, when we have the club mostly to ourselves, get our favorite table, and dance a while before the place starts to fill-up. We leave before 2:30 AM, when all the people from the other bars in town arrive (most bars close around 2:00 AM), and the place becomes insufferably crowded and smoky. Try to get a table in the front room - the smoke isn't so thick and the view of the dancers is good. Cuba Mia - For the younger crowd, good Latin music, mostly salsa, and energetic dancers. Dance lessons are offered here in the late afternoons. ShoppingSorry, still under construction. Sights and EventsSorry, still under construction. |
